Experiments with oil pastels

Portuguese Man o' war

I think I found my favorite medium to draw with!

I’ve been wanting to try oil pastels for a while now, and I finally did!

I’m very happy with this first study on transparency with oil pastels and acrylic white pen on a Portuguese Man o’ war, one of the many creatures of Nature that fascinate me. Siphonophorae really are something else 🙂

It was the first time I tried something like this, since for my drawings I usually choose color block technique inspired by the Topolino magazine and color digitally.

Oil pastels are a game changer for me. They can be layered, mixed, and also give the possibility to add 3D effects to a drawing. Isn’t it great? 😀
I’m still far from mastering the technique but I love it already!
I have a sort of “colour fear”, I’m comfortable with drawing in b/w and digital coloring, but analogic media scare me, I don’t feel skilled enough.
But for oil pastels I’m willing to overcome my fears 😀

On the same marine note, I did this study of an underwater landscape featuring a Manta 🙂

I believe it’s important to share ‘imperfect’ works and half done sketches, so everyone can see that drawing is a matter of practice, it can be learned with dedication and time, like everything else.

We can attain skill only by actually doing the thing we are trying to learn.

I’m looking forward to experimenting more with oil pastels!
